fedora 18 updates won't boot

I am dual booting Fedora 18 and Windows 7 on an Asus Ultrabook. Fedora is installed encrypted to the built in 25GB SSD. Fedora will never boot after a yum update that includes a new kernel. I log in to the encrypted disk, but then the boot fails. My work around is to select the original installed kernel (3.6.10-4.fc18.x86-64) in grub. Why can't I boot the updates?
