How can I modify the close (X) icon of open windows? I've installed several icon themes, which change most of the icons, but none of them changed the close, maximize and minimize button icons. Note, when switching themes under 'current theme' in gnome-tweak-tool, the top bar and close icon changes, but not when switching using GTK+ Theme.

There are two theme options in gnome-tweak-tool

  1. current theme/window theme
  2. Gtk+ theme

First one will change theme of window controls including title bar and close, minimize and maximize buttons.
While gtk+ theme is intended for the rest part of window.

note : changing icon theme will change control icons except window controls icons like close, minimize and maximize.

This can be configured through the Gnome Tweak Tool, which can be installed with yum.

yum install gnome-tweak-tool

Just run Gnome Tweak Tool from the menu or start gnome-tweak-tool as a normal user and change Arrangement of buttons on the titlebar in the Shell section. The options are:

  • Close only
  • Maximize and Close
  • Minimize and Close
  • All
