solution: use knoppix, mount /etc/shadow - delete the second part between the :: - reboot and set a new root pw .... fedora rocks!

Live CD, as far as I know, does NOT have a rescue mode. Use either DVD or netinstall iso for rescuing your fedora system.

When you run the rescue mode, you can choose "Rescue an installation" (or something similar). This should mount your system under /mnt/sysimage from where you can go about changing the root password and such.
