How can I fix slow wifi with qualcomm atheros ar9485?

With another computer running Fedora, I can get full bars in a location where this laptop doesn't find any networks. To get a slow connection, I have to be right by the wireless port. I am using network manager, my system is up to date, and I haven't done anything out of the ordinary.

Please let me know what other information you might need to diagnose the problem.
