In Mate my CPU consumption is very high

I know I must be doing something wrong, possibly due to old initialization files I have been using for a long time. When I run mate, 'top' tells me that X is consuming about 50% of CPU, and that wnck-applet is consuming about another 50%. If I run gnome-shell, CPU consumption is back to normal (no application consumes more than .3% of CPU if I just have terminals open). I would appreciate a hint about what may cause this, since Mate does things the way I am used to, so I prefer it to gnome-shell.

I don't have a solution to your problem so I'm only posting this as a comment.

Gnome-Shell 3.8 has introduced "classic-mode". It basically took all the extensions that brought the Gnome 2 look and combined them into one package. You might want to look into that. Gnome-Shell 3.8 is available in F19.

I didn't know about that. I will look into it. Thanks a lot for the information.

Try creating a new user and see if the issue persists.
