My laptop is acer aspire timline X 5820TG. It has the same GPU like you, and Unfortunately, I failed to use akmod-catalyst either. I got fglrx work two years ago in Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit with bios option discrete card only and fail now for some unknown reasons.
Now there are three operating systems in my laptop.
Windows 7 64-bit, succeed of course.
Fedora 19 32-bit, use open source driver radeon only.
CentOS 6.4 32-bit, succeed with a RPM repository called ELRepo, but it only support enterprise linux.
There is still something you can do:
- Go to BIOS changing the option to force your laptop use discrete card only. In my case the default value is 'switchable.' And install the driver again.
- Check whether you miss some 32-bit libraries listed in the official AMD linux installation document.
- Some error messages in /var/log/Xorg.N.log might help.
Hope you will get a nice result.
