Is fedora a good 'starting' operating system? I've recently been getting more and more into linux and wanting to grab onto a distribution. I enjoy ubuntu, but i've really liked playing around with the fedora OS and find it very cool (minus the problems i've had with clang). What are your opinions on picking up fedora as my first OS?
Fedora is the 2nd Linux distro I've used, Ubuntu is the 1st. The most obvious difference is that Ubuntu is a little more user-friendly. For instance, Ubuntu installs w\ the Adobe Flash plugin already included, but w\ Fedora it has to be installed separately, and you'll need to know which repositories to get it from. Launch a terminal and on the command-line, use yum whatprovidespackage-name to get information on packages and where to find them.
Fedora has a GUI-based
package-manager application, similar
to Synaptic in Ubuntu, called Yumex.
It works all right (WARNING: Do
NOT use Synaptic or ANY other
Debian-based software in Fedora!)
but I prefer to use sudo yum
update at the terminal prompt.
You'll need to log in as administrator or root to do this.
Could be the first OS , but use released Fedora (stable) and updated . As open-source many things can't be distributed like mp3, acrobat reader , flash player etc etc for that you will need 3rd parts repos , like rpmfusion, dries, websphere for example look into http://www.fedorafaq.org/
