I am new to linux and fedora and am trying to learn the ropes. I want to install the latest stable release of libreoffice on a fresh installation of fedora 16. I am using an old dell laptop as my learning device and the hardware does not support fedora 17 or I would have used it.

There is a dizzying array of packages in add/remove software when I search for libreoffice and thus need help determining what actually to install.

I tried using wget to download the latest stable tar.gz distribution and was denied. I think it is a firewall issue but the firewall config tool was not real helpful to me.

perhaps I am looking for a good sysadmin tutorial for fedora.

Thank you in advance...

Does the hardware support Fedora 18? Which hardware is it? You might try running a Live CD to check this and upgrade since Fedora 16 is end of life and won't receive any further updates.

Having said that, if you prefer the graphical interface, you can go to the office category and select "LibreOffice Spreadsheet Application", "LibreOffice Presentation Application" and "LibreOffice Word Processor Application". The package names are libreoffice-calc, libreoffice-impress and libreoffice-writer respectively.

If you are familiar with the command line, the easiest way to get LibreOffice would be do the following

su -c 'yum install @office'

Enter your root password and you will have the office suite installed.

Fedora repositories usually don't keep up with the latest stable versions of LibreOffice, hence you should follow the instructions given here http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/installation/linux/
