root password does not work when using "su" in the shell or installing software as a normal user
Hi there,
I am quite fond of Fedora but I am facing the following problem: Whenever I try to use the "su" or "sudo" command in the shell or whenever i try to perform an action which requires admin rights, (like installing software) the system won't accept my root password, but to register as "root" right at the beginning, using the same password, works. That is kind of funny. And is hindering me installing "eclipse" and so on. Please help. Thanks in advance. Josef
Please can you check at the users menu at the system settings if your account belongs to the Administrators Group (it has to be checked).
That only applies to sudo. I'm not in the admin group, but I have no trouble using su, TYVM.
Is it possible that you are using different keyboard layouts when you log in and when you are logged in as normal user? If your password has letters, that are on different positions in the different layouts, you unintentionally enter the wrong letters. For example z and y are interchanged in german and english keyboard layout. Type your password in a textprogram, to see, if it displays as expected. — Und auf deutsch: Wahrscheinlich werden verschiedene Tastaturbelegungen verwendet, wenn Du Dich anmeldest (als root) und wenn Du schon als normaler Benutzer angemeldet bist.
Just a thought: if you're using sudo, use your password, not root's. And, if you're in the admin group, if you're asked for a password in a GUI, it's yours that's expected.
Hi there guys, I was offline for a while. But be assured that your answers are very helpful...Thanks a lot! Josef
