Gnome shell fails to launch apps

I'm running Fedora 29. When I click on an app in the gnome shell (e.g., "Clocks"), nothing seems to happen. However, running the application from a terminal window (e.g., gnome-clocks) works with no errors. How can I debug the problem? I haven't been able to find a log file with any relevant error message. This happens with some applications but not others (e.g., GHex can be started from gnome-shell).

open a terminal, become root and enter:

journalctl -xef

now start gnome-clocks and you shall see all errors the start produces.

Thanks! That is what I needed to debug the issue. I had upgraded packages and not yet logged out/rebooted.
