How Can I Install Windows 10 To Dual Boot With My Fedora 29 Install

asked 2019-04-19 15:43:30 -0600

I have Fedora 29 on a Dell Laptop and it works great; I've been exceedingly happy with it. Sadly though I sometimes need to work on Windows. I usually work on it via a Boxes image but it would be handy to be able to dual boot to Windows 10. I've seen lots about how to install a second partition on a Windows box to dual boot to Fedora but I don't think I've ever seen any advice about how to do it the other way. That is, to add a Windows partition to an existing Fedora installation.

I have Googled and haven't come up with much except as I say, the question asked the other way around. If there's a resource I can look at, please point me to it.

That sounds challenging. I think it is not possible to add Windows to a Linux formatted system using ext4 on Fedora. The other way around of course it is. Windows just cannot read the ext3/4 file system.

The fact that Windows can't read ext file systems has nothing to do with installing in a dual boot.

There is no guide because it is complicated to do. It is possible with a little knowledge of Linux and Windows. With two hard drive, it is as easy as disconnecting one drive for the install. On a system such as a laptop where partitioning is required it is more complicated. I have not done it but this should work. 1. Boot into a live Fedora USB and resize your Fedora installation with Disks in Fedora on a try without installing boot. 2. Install Windows 10 3. Boot into a live Fedora USB Try without installing and chroot into your fedora install and reinstall grub. I am not sure how to accomplish this so I can't explain it but you should find guides online to show you how. I know how to do this in Ubuntu as they have a guide on Ubuntu Grub wiki for Ubuntu for this. But you need to do it Fedora so I am unsure how to chroot into a Fedora install.

This is complicated is why there is no guide available.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gru... This has to be modified for Fedora for step 3. dnf instead of apt etc.

For step 3 use the following for Fedora: https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/ques...
