VirtualBox Guest Additions fails with Fedora 4.20

I allowed my Virtual Fedora machine to do a software update which appears to have installed the 4.20.11 kernel. I think I've picked up the 4.20.12 kernel as well during today's struggles.

At first, I just could not find my user name on the login screen. It became apparent that this was due to a failure of VirtualBox Guest Additions; when I resized my screen down, I was able to log in. Response of the screen ranges from tens of seconds of delay to complete failure to do anything.

In the process of trying to get this to work, I've updated my Guest Additions from 5.2.0 to 6.0.0, installed new kernel headers and dug into the Virtual Box install log, which suggested a 'make oldconfig' and 'make prepare' on the kernel source, which I have done, (required installation of bison and flex)

For a while, it seemed I could still boot into the 4.18 Kernel, but now that one is exhibiting the same symptoms, now only recovery seems to work.

If I can't figure out how this is supposed to work, I may just abandon the idea of trying to keep my system up to date. It is simply too dangerous.

I've read that since version 4.16 of the kernel has GuestAdditions in it. Could this be conflicting?

This is perhaps the virtualbox-guest-additions package from the fedora repository.

I suppose it probably is. Attempting to install guest additions using 'dnf install' tells me there is nothing to do. An uninstall and reinstall yielded no change.
