f28 workstation: what packages can I delete if I don't use gnome desktop?
Hi,
TL;DR I don't use Evolution email client and I don't use gnome desktop. What packages can I get rid of if I want the lightest weight f28 desktop?
Long version In trying to get a more minimalist and lighter desktop environment I decided to use i3wm and some lighter email clients I have used in the past. I'm newish to Fedora, have used it for about a year since I had new hardware that would not run Slackware as I have used for about 15 years. I like Fedora's package-management and having good access to new kernels and spending much less time as home sysadmin, but I miss the simplicity and lightness of Slackware. I'm hoping to be able to configure Fedora to be less dependent on gnome and doing things for me which I don't want and never asked for in the first place, and instead just be a transparent lightweight Linux with the packages I want and without the services I don't want.
Now that I don't need evolution, gnome-keyring, and the gnome desktop, which packages or groups is it safe to delete? What services can I delete? Tracker is gone, but I have 248-260 tasks showing on top with just two browsers and an email client going.
I looked into deleting gnome-desktop* but it wanted to get rid of stuff like packagekit and other pieces that seem like they should not be deleted with it. I don't know enough about Fedora to know what is required.
Thank you,
Bill
Once installed it’s almost impossible to remove the Gnome Desktop. Better reinstall Fedora using the desktop you actually want.
From what you write, I feel you may want to try starting off the netinstall image (getfedora.org)

Thanks guys, I will try it next time.
