I updated from Fedora 27 to Fedora 28 and the icons disappeared off the desktop. In F27 I had to run gnome-tweaks to arrange the desktop but in Fedora 28 gnome-tweaks doesn't work. It crashes with the following messages:

gnome-tweaks

WARNING : Shell not installed or running

(gnome-tweaks:3849): dconf-WARNING **: 22:54:43.387: failed to commit changes to dconf: The connection is closed WARNING : Error detecting shell

The back trace is:

The bash window does not close and becomes unresponsive; if I try to close the window I get message "There is still a process runnig in this terminal". The version of gnome-tweaks is reported as current by dnf.

What is the best way to proceed and get the icons back on the desktop?

Check if Gnome is running using Wayland. If Wayland is the display servier, select Gnome on xorg at GDM login. HTH

Thank you. After writing the original post I continued to search the Internet and found a reference to using the Nemo desktop for gnome. Installed that and the icons came back. It boggles me that the Gnome development tyeam have spent so much time, and probably money, developing a completely useless user interface! I've been trying to figure out since I installed Fedora 27 how to get back to KDE, so far without any of the suggestions working.

Thanks again.

John
