My printer/scanner is connected via a network. Xsane doesn't see the scanner although my printer works fine.

The hplip package provides hp-scan. For using xsane find out your printer ip address first and then run hp-makeuri utility from the commandline:

hp-makeuri 192.168.1.8

output should look like

hpaio:/net/LaserJet_3050_series?ip=192.168.1.8

then

xsane "hpaio:/net/LaserJet_3050_series?ip=192.168.1.8"
