High Sierra won't boot Fedora from USB
- Macbook Pro: Early 2011 running High Sierra 10.13.6
- Trying to install: Fedora 28 Workstation
- Created bootable USB using Fedora Media Writer
- Just tried going into the Mac recovery mode and turning SIP off from the command line. This didn't help.
I partitioned the boot drive on the MBP. (750GB drive) Giving macOS 550GB and Fedora 200GB. Once I've created the bootable USB drive, I reboot my computer, hold "option" button. I see the boot screen asking me to choose HD or Fedora. I click on the Fedora icon. This is the part that fails --> The computer ignores my selection of Fedora and boots directly to Mac OSX. The same behavior happened on my 2009 27' iMac. I feel like I'm missing something. On a Windows machine I could tell the computer to only boot from USB in the bios, but I don't know how to tell a Mac to do this. (If you have to)
I've made sure the USB drive was formatted properly (Fat32 GUID) I tried and failed to install Elementary Linux too.
Anyone have suggestions on how I can get High Sierra to recognize the USB drive?
Try plugging the same USB into a Windows machine. Check if that works or if that errors. This might be an issue with the USB rather than the boot order.
I will definitely try that although I have to say, I've tried this on two different Mac's. (My MacBook Pro and an iMac, and I've tried using two different USB sticks.
I'm starting to wonder if the bootable USB drive is looking at the CD Rom as a drive, not seeing a readable partition, and defaulting back to the laptops hard drive. Is that possible?
Well... it does recognize that there is an installation of Fedora there, so I don't think that is the issue. Could be though, I certainly don't have a ton of experience with Macs.
