How do I install VMware Workstation Player 12 on Fedora 28?
Hello.
I like using Linux on my desktop. I want to use Fedora 28 as my daily driver. I am able to do browse the web, watch videos, and even play video games. Unfortunately, many titles I enjoyed are not compatible with Linux . I was unaware of the power of VMware, and I intend on using it to play games from other operating systems inside of a Linux environment.
I have tried to install the latest VMware Workstation Player 14.1.2 on my previously installed Fedora 28. However, I have what VMware refers to as a "legacy" CPU and therefore am unable to launch virtual machines within the software known as 14.1.2. This however does not affect versions of VMware Workstation Player 12.
However, I had followed a tutorial to get other packages around compiling and kernel headers prior to installing 12.5.9. After a successful install, I proceed to open the shortcut from my start menu. VMware never opens. At that time, I uninstalled 12.5.9 and decided to look again at 14.1.2. I found no mention of the config.ini file on Linux. There was a preferences document, which I added the line to allow legacy CPUs, and saved the document to no avail. I decided I wanted to avoid any sort of conflict with 14 and 12, and will do a fresh install of Fedora 28 and install VMware Workstation Player 12 on it.
I want to know which version of VMware Workstation Player 12 would work at all, or perhaps with the least amount of crashing without warning.
No clue about VMWare Player. However, there is Gnome Boxes - a free and open source virtualization software - that ships with Fedora. It works out of the box!
Hmm. I was not aware of this program. I will try it very soon.
