On my newly installed Fedora 28 system, I tried, without success, to configure my Epson Worforce WF-2750 printer.

After plugging my printer device on USB, the printer was automatically configured in Fedora and print a broken test page (no content, only one char: 'F').

In printer settings: "Workforce WF-2750" was not list in Epson available drivers, so a generic one was selected by default. I considered this was the source of the issue.

I download the official driver from this link: http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/du/....

As requested I installed lsb package and I followed instructions in the README file:

  • install downloaded rpm package (epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.6.20-1lsb3.2.i486.rpm),
  • restart cups server manually
  • configure the printer:

    • using cups web interface and ppd file dedicated for "Workforce WF-2750" (installed in /opt),
    • alternatively, using provided lpadmin command with same ppd file,

When I try to print a test page, nothing done.

I configure cups log level to debug and found following error.

grep '^[E]' -n /var/log/cups/error_log
449:E [21/May/2018:22:26:38 +0200] [Job 23] Unable to open raster stream - : Broken pipe
533:E [21/May/2018:22:26:38 +0200] [Job 23] Job stopped due to filter errors; please consult the error_log file for details.

After several days of investigation, I don't know how to debug at next level...

Following Fedora wiki, i have generated a troubleshoot files. If you feel inspired by this issue, I can provide them, as well as Espon PPD and ReadMe files (Unfortunately I am not allowed to add them in attachment). Any help is really appreciated.

The package is available in Fedora 28, from the updates repository.

You should probably:

rpm --erase epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.6.20-1lsb3.2.i486.rpm

Then try:

su -
[Enter password]
dnf install epson-inkjet-printer-escpr
or:
sudo dnf install epson-inkjet-printer-escpr

You got the right intuition. Thank you for help. I also add an answer with full command list and more detail about the source of issue.

2018-6-10 14:00 GMT + !! Again tried to print and job hung because escpr support file missing from subdirectory of the /opt directory.

Checked the /opt directory and again it was empty.

This time I followed the repository based uninstall/reinstall procedure as detailed above. The support files went into a subdirectory of the /usr/lib/cups/ directory but print job still STOPPED because support file not in the subdirectory of the /opt directory, manually copied files to get things working temporarily.

There are 2 problems:- 1/ Files are expected in the /opt directory not the /usr/lib/cups/ subdirectory; 2/ Periodically some process purges everything from the /opt directory.

Possibly the system during installation of sheduled updates purges software files installed that don't come from the repository or that are installed by clicking on the name of an .rpm file? I have been applying repository updates practically every day since I installed the Epson support files.

I have the same problem with a WF-2630 but the cause is that something deleted the support files for the printer from the /opt directory.

Initially I connected the printer and tried to print a file but the print job just sat in the print queue not moving. I looked in the log and saw error messages message in log about a missing filter "opt/epson-inkjet-printer-escpr/cups/lib/filter/epson-escpr-wrapper". I googled this message and found the appropriate support file package "epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.4.1-1lsb3.2.x86_64" on the Epson site, downloaded it and installed it by clicking on the name of the .rpm file downloaded. The file went into the /opt directory which I confirmed by examining the contents of the directory. I didn't actually try to print anything then but several days later I tried to print a file and printing failed with the same error messages on the log as before I had installed the support files. Again I looked in the /opt directory and saw that it was empty.

It seems the are some differences installing fedora hosted epson-inkjet-printer-escpr package than the downloaded epson-inkjet-printer-escpr.rpm package. For instance, the first one add some files in /usr/lib/cups/filter but not the second one.

sudo dnf install ./epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.6.20-1lsb3.2.x86_64.rpm
sudo dnf list --installed | grep epson
epson-inkjet-printer-escpr.x86_64 1.6.20-1lsb3.2 @@commandline

ls /usr/lib/cups/filter/ | grep epson
commandtoepson
rastertoepson

sudo dnf remove epson-inkjet-printer-escpr
sudo dnf install epson-inkjet-printer-escpr
sudo dnf list --installed | grep epson
epson-inkjet-printer-escpr.x86_64 1:1.6.20-1.1lsb3.2.fc28 @updates

ls /usr/lib/cups/filter/ | grep epson
commandtoepson
epson-escpr
epson-escpr-wrapper
rastertoepson

After found where the PPD file is located in the second case, I just need to gunzip the archive and select the file in gnome printer conf wizard.

sudo gunzip /usr/share/ppd/Epson/epson-inkjet-printer-escpr/Epson-WF-2750_Series-epson-escpr-en.ppd.gz

For your information, in the first case all missing files are located in /opt so I guess it always possible to manually deploy them in expected directories (with copy / link and appropriate rights I suppose). But I prefered to switch to the packaged option.

ls /opt/epson-inkjet-printer-escpr/cups/lib/filter/
epson-escpr epson-escpr-wrapper

ls /opt/epson-inkjet-printer-escpr/ppds/Epson | grep WF-2750
Epson-WF-2750_Series-epson-inkjet-printer-escpr.ppd.gz
