loading firmware for gobi 3000

I have a Gobi 3000/Sierra Wireless MC8355 WWAN card in my thinkpad x220t running fedora 27 workstation, kernel 4.16.5.

I've tried using gobi_loader and getting the firmware from the arch package and configuring it, but the card won't load the firmware no matter what i do.
I have a mobile broadband conection set up in networkmanager but it says "mobile broadband not enabled", presumably due to the firmware not being loaded.
