I gather it's been a design decision to remove icons on the desktop on Fedora 28. Design decisions are good, but why not have a checkbox somewhere that says 'allow icons on desktop' How do I get them back?

Even better, if I could choose whether I want them auto-arranged at the left or the right of the screen.

XFCE or KDE, is a good alternative...

Gnome has removed desktop icons. There's bit more about it in Fedora Magazine.

Unilateral design decisions are NOT good. Gnome is BAD. Delete Gnome.

What unilateral design decision? Did you read the link? The code has been unmaintained for 6 years!!! Go add yourself as a maintainer and get the code back in - it's that simple.

I have to disagree @bit4man , dropping features is a unilateral design decision. The code not being maintained should be no excuse, in fact, not maintaining code is, per se, an issue (and a common practice from Gnome developers since Gnome 3, lazy maintenance... - "I don't want to maintain it, lets just remove it and if any user complain, lets just criticize them as if they are wrong")
