When you try to run it from the command line what does it say? Do you have an Nvidia Card (I imagine you do since you using the RPM Repo you mentioned)? I would try to install using the UnitedRPM's, but I use RPMFusion, it has worked for me on an nvidia card and on an AMD card.
At worst, try to delete "~/.steam" or move it /tmp and see if that helps resolve your problem or get you further.
