I am running fedora 27 on lenovo x1. I am trying to start a ad-hoc network using the xfce4 network manager. The network manager tries but fails and resorts back to the default wifi network. How can I debug the issue. I seem to have all the necessary dependencies.
I got this working by collating a couple of docs on networking and ad-hoc mode. On both the laptops, I executed the command sequence (of course with different static ip).
systemctl disable NetworkManager.service
ip link set wlp4s0 down
iwconfig wlp4s0 mode ad-hoc
iwconfig wlp4s0 essid 'll2'
iwconfig wlp4s0 key 1234567890
iwconfig wlp4s0 channel 4
ip link set wlp4s0 up
ip addr add 169.254.34.2/16 dev wlp4s0
I don't know what the xfce4 network manager has, but the Gnome wireless control panel has an option to turn on a wifi hotspot. Now that I know what you were trying to do, I would suggest using nm-connection-editor as it has support for configuring the less common options.

Are you trying to share your Ethernet connection or trying to join an ad-hoc network? After you try it, run
sudo journalctl -rand see if there are any relevant messages.I was trying to share the wifi network. I finally got this working and pasted the recipe below.
