Hi there,

After 5-10 minutes after the start of my desktop machine with AMD graphics card the monitors go black. The monitor does not get any video signal anymore. It does not depend if I log in or just keep login screen active. After reboot the monitor gets video signals again. I found many "black screen" problem that depended on missing drivers after update but I do not think this is the problem here.

Any ideas or commands I could run to get infos about my problem?

Max

UPDATE:

I tried to solve the problem and after some test the monitor went black even before reaching the login screen. After pressing e and including nomodeset=0 and starting with CTRL+x I could get access to my desktop again. I got the error message no UMS support in radeon during starting. So I think my radeon driver made those problems. After another dnf update I could login again but after some minutes the signal was lost again.

Are you using the open source radeon driver? Also, are you getting feedback from the monitor indicating that there really is no signal, or is it just showing a black screen? Finally, does your computer have a motherboard HDMI/VGA port that you can use to test if it's an issue with the graphics card?

  1. Monitor switches to Bluescrren telling me that there is no HDMI signal anymore.
  2. Only a graphic card with two DVI ports.

What would be the easiest method to check if graphiccard is still working correct. Its an old Radeon 4800 series card.

Hi, the next time this issue happens, reboot and run as root or admin journalctl -b -1 and press end key to get to the end of log from previous boot, there you can find out what was happening when screen turned blank.

Install xsensors and monitor GPU temperatures, in case it's an overheating problem.

Hi thanks for the suggestion. My problem is that the black screen appears even earlier now and I do not have the time to get the informations I need. Just after logging in the screen goes black (monitor announcing no hdmi signal anymore). I think my GPU died. Time for a new system...

I will try later to start a terminal only session to get some informations. But I am without any great expections now :-(

You could have same problems I had and solved with workaround changing power profile or disabling dpm:
