Media Player
Is there a media player that works for Fedora 27 that will play DVDs, *.mkv, *.mp4, and etc? Like VLC says it will but doesn't. I've spent hours looking for information to get VLC to play DVDs I own to no avail.
It seems pointless to use a "bleeding edge" OS like Fedora if I can play simple media files. Inaddition to it breaks VirtualBox every kernel update.
Fedora is committed to free software, free formats, free technology, you better blame the corrupt politicians who allowed software patents and other abominations. Playing DVDs can be done installing 3rd party software (libdvdcss). VirtualBox contains proprietary bits and cannot be distributed by Fedora, dkms will rebuild VB kernel module after a kernel update. You can always use qemu/kvm for a free virtualization solution.
As is all too common, people fail to read or listen. As you can clearly see in my post that I've spent hours trying to get VLC to work properly. I did get a solution to rebuild the kernel for VB. Just exactly what were your trying to contribute? I'll won't waste time blaming politicians as I know that will go no where. What I have been looking for are solutions, and unfortunately I won't find them here.
as someone who uses vlc, I am not sure what is missing from your copy, but the vlc I run plays every single dvd, and blueray I put in. No issues. Telling me that you have something configured wrong, or just missing some library or driver. Where did you get your vlc? I downloaded and compiled mine, from the vlc website. Have you tried that? HTH.
Oh gosh!!! So you @horndog are the one who read and listen? I'm quoting you (since you are blaming Fedora): ""It seems pointless to use a "bleeding edge" OS like Fedora if I can play simple media files. Inaddition to it breaks VirtualBox every kernel update."". I explained to you exactly why a bleeding edge OS cannot play simple media files and why you have issues with VirtualBox, which is not in Fedora repositories and so it is not synchronized with regular Fedora updates...why am I wasting my time with someone who cannot read and listen anyway?
@horndog
1) Virtual box, man! it uses a basic mode in graphical things... Then cry to Oracle....
2) Vlc is provided for third-party repositories... rpmfusion, unitedrpms, negativo... If you don't like the "politicians" en Fedora; Well then make a solution with your hands...
3) Do you want support; pay for it... Here we help in an altruistic way (the majority).
