Am trying to install mysql 5.6 on fedora 27. I need 5.6 or 5.5 specifically to run openmrs. I've followed the tutorial at https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.6/... . However, for some reason after adding the yum repository i cannot select the 5.6 release. It's just not available. Wondering if anyone has succeeded or if there is another way. Thanks

The instructions you are linking, are targeted more for RHEL/CentOS/Oracle Linux. For Fedora you will have to add another repository, as well as make use of dnf instead of yum.
Adding the repo: dnf install https://dev.mysql.com/get/mysql57-community-release-fc27-10.noarch.rpm
Install mysql 5.7: dnf install mysql-community-server
That's it.
community-mysql version 5.7.20-1.fc27 is provided in the fedora repositories as well. However, version 5.6 was required.
I got the instructions from paleu (above) to work on fedora 27. Now I need to figure out how to start the server (assuming it really is installed properly). I also want to figure out how to auto-start the server. I would also like to added to the GUI as an available app. (/usr/share/applications) ???

Note that the MySQL YUM repository guide does say that
Not all versions of MySQL are supported on all these Linux distributions. See Selecting a Release Series on how to determine if your Linux distrituion supports a particular version.
Checking the repository shows that F24 is the last support release for MySQL 5.6.
To workaround that problem, you could use Vagrant to install MySQL 5.6 in a CentOS 7 box. You can check this blog post to have some idea about what configure (and how) to be able to connect your application from the host.
