At startup, I have the following notification in GNOME Shell :

Software Upgrade Available

A new version of Fedora is available to install

GNOME Shell notification

Same thing in GNOME Software :

Fedora 27 Now Available

A major upgrade, with new features and added polish.

GNOME Software notification

Is it possible to disable these notifications ?

(I wan't to avoid that a friend upgrades the system on his computer)

Update: same issue for Fedora 27 -> 28 upgrade...

You can disable all Gnome Software notifications in Settings -> Notifications. This will however disable notifications for updates too...

Indeed, better than nothing ;)

I want to allow (and encourage) the user to install regular updates without tempting him to upgrade the whole system (a package is not available on Fedora 27).

I would not enourage anyone to install/remove software using Gnome Software. It only leads to problems down the road.

You can disable (mask) Gnome Software entirely.

That way ...

  • you don't receive any notifications
  • Software is not using up bandwidth by downloading metadata
  • you don't use it to install/remove software, which breaks the proper functionality of dnf

.

sudo systemctl mask packagekit.service

Very useful, thanks ! But I still want the user to be able to use it to update/install applications using Gnome Software.

Good question. How to enable end-user to update the system but not to upgrade it to the next release.

I have written a bug report, seems like there is no obvious way of disabling system upgrade notifications.
