I have a radeon based graphics card which is not working properly, that is not giving a choice of monitor resolution. Whatever I try in Gnome settings the only choice available is 1024x768.

Using the terminal I tried using xrandr to change the resolution, to no effect.

Running Fedora 27, but the monitor problem was there in F26 too.

The answer I eventually found was provided on this forum by Ahmad Samir at

I had installed in "basic graphics mode" and the nomodeset boot parameter had been added to the grub configuration file.

I removed it (it was in 3 places). BUT when i rebooted I returned to the problem which had caused me to install in basic graphics mode, the display went black at various stages just before or after login.

My problem was the graphics card, which I changed. Fedora then booted properly and found a driver for the card and correctly identified the monitor and its optimal resolution.
