Most spelling programs, such as hunspell, aspell or ispell have a text based interface. These are very difficult to use, mainly because it difficult to go backwards or start in the middle of the document.

Is there a true GUI for these programs?

Of course I could copy and paste to Libreoffice, but this as its problems, because *spell recognizes LaTeX or other markup and Libreoffice will not.

thanks for the pointers. gtkspell is a gui library, unfortunately the links to demos using gtkspell seem to be broken.

Geany with geany-plugins-spellcheck works with hunpsell dictionaries. As for backwards, most of text editors can do this. You have to search for it.

Of course, I could spell-check with gedit, the problem is that the spell checker will not recognize the markup and have a lot of false positives. the command line versions can skip (most of) the markup, but it has other interface drawbacks.
