When Log out Screen goes black and cannot recover video

I can boot and get the gnome login screen, but when I log out my monitors loose the signal (both digital) and I have to power cycle the machine to get back to the log screen.

Did you try to just restart X? Press ctrl + alt + F1 when that happens to get to a terminal screen and start X again and see what happens
