What is the difference between these two?

  • from command line: sudo dnf update
  • from GUI: Power off > Install pending software updates

Or do they do the same thing?

Actually the Gnome Software manager doesn't see or update ALL software. If you have extra Repositories and software installed, dnf or dnfdragora is the only way to update everything. I've had Upgrades break, and fail, sometimes leaving the system completely unbootable when I tried to use the Gnome Software manager to do Upgrades.
