When I installed I got a message gnome in fall-back mode because you don't have a hotshot video card

Is there some specification that I could use to determine what cards meet the requirement - or a list of "approved" cards?

Fedora 17 works with Gnome Shell even without hardware acceleration. This, however, puts more burden on you CPU.

This is true. You can run it without using GPU acceleration. I have also had it running on just my Intel on board graphics. There is no need to buy extra hardware to run it.
