Hello,

Could I have some advice on installing ATI Catalyst drivers in Fedora 16?

After installing them from RPMFusion and rebooting, the screen stays black except for some weird characters..and the system won’t start.

Am I doing something wrong? I didn’t type “sudo aticonfig –initial” before rebooting...is this potentially the problem?

Thanks,

G

the correct syntax is

sudo aticonfig --initial

and you have to put

nomedeset

in your kernel boot line

sudo aticonfig –initial

command lets you know whether your hardware is supported by it or not, If not also you can write your own xorg.conf to make it support that ATI hardware. Please go through below link in Archwiki

ATI Catalyst and check you can debug your current problem or not.

Also in the same link go through the troubleshoot section for having a better idea what to do incase your ATI Radeon hardware doesn't have a support in the current fglrx driver.

Also check for the Fedoraforum link having similar problems reported as yours.

maybe you have a conflict between the proprietary drivers and free:

sudo yum -y remove mesa-dri-drivers

reboot
