When will 32bit support end on fedora?
I've been thinking about switching my 32bit laptop from manjaro to fedora. I'm planning to use it for at least 1.5 more years, until I get a new one. So I want to be able to update it at fedora 27 and 28 when they get released. Will fedora i386 be supported then? I've read on the internet that fedora is about to drop 32bit support but I haven't seen any specific day or release from any official sources.
Thx in advance.
Processors are 64 bit for more than a decade now, I do not see a reason why you would want to use a distribution compiled for i386 architecture on a relatively new machine.
support for Fedora Server for 32 bit systems has already been dropped as of Fedora 24.
Here is a discussion of relevant Fedora people about dropping i686 support for the Workstation Edition. You can be sure that it will be dropped - question is only when... If I was you, I would assume 32bit install media will be created for at least 1 more year.
@bob On low-memory machines, it can make sense to run a 32bit edition of Fedora instead of 64bit.
@bob No no, sorry if I didn't explain it well, the machine is more than 10 years old and 32bit only capable. What I said is that I will take a new 64bit laptop in about 1.5 years so I need 32bit support on my old laptop at least until fedora 28.
@florian thx for the links. Well arch/manjaro is dropping 32bit support on November. Since I use the xfce desktop the only question for me is Fedora Xfce or Xubuntu. I'm not familiar with fedora's polices but is it possible, even after Fedora Workstation (Gnome edition) drops 32bit support, that the rest community spins like the xfce one to continue provide 32bit ISOs?
