Fedora 25: Nouveau crashing upon loading GNOME shell

Hello - I just installed Fedora fresh on a PC with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti. The live OS worked fine pre/during/post installation, but as soon as I booted up the new system and entered my password on GDM, the screen froze entirely (no switching to TTY either) and I had to hard-reset. This was on nouveau version 1.0.13, logging into a GNOME Wayland session.

I upgraded all the packages in the system, getting me to nouveau version 1.0.14-2 (some people have had similar issues in the last day or two and this version has fixed it for them), but the same thing still occurs. Not only that, but before login, the screen freezes if I try switching to a TTY and unfreezes when I press Ctrl+Alt+1 to get back to GDM.

If I try starting a GNOME on X.org session, GNOME will load for approximately 1 minute and will then, at a random point, freeze, so I have to hard-reset again.

Using the 'restore' boot option in GRUB (this loads the kernel installed before I updated, which I believe is 4.8.6, and I think has a different initramfs) I managed to get a TTY up and get out some logs. From the most recent crash (directly before hard reset):

The crash before that shows a slightly different log (this is the crash that occurs before GNOME shell loads at all, in a Wayland session):

kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: disp: chid 1 mthd 0094 data f0000000 00007094 00000000

The final message of that log is repeated almost 200,000 times before the hard reset...

I was tempted to think this is a hardware problem, but I doubt it since I'm dual-booting Windows 10 which is working absolutely perfectly ... (more)

Switch to an Nvidia driver, blacklist nouveau, and see if that helps.

yeah, nvidia works fine. Would be nice to find out why the nouveau driver has suddenly died, however.

lots of posts about nouveau issues, maybe something happened to the development team and stuff is slipping into the code.

I updated from a fresh f25 installation today having been running for about 5 days with no problems. gnome-shell immediately started crashing on me. I have a Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti too. Switched to Nvidia prop and no problems.

@dtw, when you installed proprietary, did you also enable dkms, so that kernel updates will rebuild driver for you?
