I know that wifi hotspots have a wifi nickname; but how about my laptop? Does this identify me on the network, or do I only need to worry about the mac address for anonymity?

If my laptop has a wifi nickname, how can I view and edit this?

I think you need see your computer name in the router interface, right?

Ok, your question motivated me to investigate and set mine. My default hostname after installation was localhost@localdomain, and I suspect that is what yours is, too.

There are two ways you can change it, either by editing the configuration files directly, or by using command hostnamectl. You can read the manpage for hostnamectl if you want to do it that way.

Add a line to /etc/hosts, leaving the line for intact: your_desired_hostname your_desired_hostname.localdomain

Create file /etc/hostname with line:

I think you can edit the nickname by running iwconfig network_name nickname desired_nickname.If you just want to know what the nickname is try to run iwconfig network_name. To know the network name run iwconfig the wifi network should be the only one with information.

You should run this iwconfig eth0 nickname "My Linux Node" instead of sudo iwconfig network_name nickname. In your case eth0 should be wlp2s0. In your command was missing the nickname.
