How to set Nautilus to:

1.- Set the side bar to tree and make that selection the default.

2.- Make the view list mode the default preference.

In Fedora 20, the Preferences menu is no longer on the dialog. However, there is a Preferences item on the top level menu which is accessible while Nautilus is active. Click on the "Files" entry on the top bar near left (beside the Activities item).

This is still the case in F22, FYI

Thanks!

The above is the only answer that works in Fedora 22. dconf-editor won't save the even if running as root.

Also, whose idea was it to bury the "Preferences" for gnome in such an obscure place?

This thread has been inactive for a year, but here's what I've found.

To change the view in the file list from icon to list:

  1. Install dconf-editor
  2. Run it and navigate to org -> gnome -> nautilus -> list-view
  3. check use-tree-view

Also look under nautilus -> preferences for default-folder-viewer and set to your preference.

I also set for my folders to sort first in the preferences section.

I haven't found how to set the navigator to tree view yet.

Awesome, Thanks for the answer, great to see the new interfaces link gnome3 and unity making it a necessity to search forums and download complex tools to be able to do the simplist of tasks.

1. Set the side bar to tree and make that selection the default.

Easy. From the Menu View->Sidebar->Tree

2. Make the view list mode the default preference.

Choose Edit->Preferences, and in the View Tab of the Preferences Dialog, select List View.

@ergidic Well, I haven't tried Fedora 18 yet. I am still running Fedora 17. You may have made that specific in your question.
