How do I make desktop appear as an app along with other apps open on the alt-tab screen?
like in windows 7 or 8.1 link text

In Gnome, something like this does not exist (to my limited knowledge) mainly because the desktop has a different usage than in Gnome 2.x, Mate, Windows, or others...
In Gnome you don't place any icons, folders, or starters on your desktop. Programs are started from the Activities menu. So, there is actually no real need to display your Desktop. (Use "Alt"+"A" and/or "Alt"+"S" for the relevant menus.)
If you still want this functionality, you need to define a custom keyboard shortcut: Settings --> Keyboard --> Navigation --> Hide all normal windows, there you set a custom short cut (i.e. "Super" + "D"), and done.
